“Va, pensiero, sull’ali dorate” resounds again amid the Arena’s thousand-year-old stones in a new production by Stefano Poda of Giuseppe Verdi’s first masterpiece, opening the 102 Arena di Verona Opera Festival on a double date.

“Two polarities attract and repel each other throughout the stage action, until they reach a point of maximum repulsion and splitting, and then arrive at the synthesis of the Finale in which the two opposites are reconciled. The metaphor is that of the bonds between atomic particles: from their union comes matter, but Man has discovered how to separate them causing total destruction. Technological progress makes everything possible – and Nabucco does not hesitate to use his material superiority against the defeated, even to the point of dramatic consequences: the lesson of this masterpiece is that rationality, to be well directed, cannot disregard spirituality.” Stephen Poda
